The Young Jewish Professionals hosted a Media Trends in Communications Summit at the Hudson Terrace on Monday, May 21st. The 75+ attendees were mainly from digital, advertising, media, both enterprise and startup types. The panel include Mark Hoffman, President of CNBC, Kay Koplovitz, Founder of USA Network, Howard Belk, Co-CEO & Chief Creative Officer of Siegel+Gale, and Peter Stern, EVP, Chief Strategy, People & Corporate Development Officer of Time Warner Cable.
Honoree of the night was Andy Monfried, CEO of Lotame, who shared an amazing personal story about how he and his wife survived a bomb explosion overseas, and it changed his life forever. He decided that life was too short and that he had to start his own company, so he did. He said to the audience “something’s going to happen to change your life forever. Embrace it.”

Mark Hoffman talked about his favorite 3 types of hires: 1. Great enterprisers/entrepreneurs 2. Great executors/project managers 3. People that possess both and are excellent operators. He also said if you hear “this is how we’re used to doing it” too often at work, you’re in a bad position.
Kay Koplovitz emphasized the importance of networking and that human capital is key to success. Kay also talked about Springboard Enterprises, a platform she launched for women entrepreneurs to think big about growing their companies and raising venture capital.

The panel talked about how to convey good ideas and make them happen in large corporations. The moderator shared a story about a young woman as a media planner who had a great idea for marketing a new flavor for Snapple on a very limited media budget. Her idea was to put stickers that said “Now available in Snapple Mango Madness” on fresh mangoes at local grocery stores. Her agency negotiated with fruit wholesalers and were able to get the marketing message across on 30 million mangoes nationwide. I found an article about this marketing execution here.
YJP did a great job getting a decorated panel for this media event. Other networking verticals YJP hosts are Finance, Real Estate, Fashion & Beauty, and Technology.
